Choose to have a Smart Active Brain or Fructose

Research continues to point out how the sweetener Fructose negatively impacts your brain… as well as your children's.  Please read this report by Dr. Mercola,

Too Much Sugar Makes You Stupid!

The rats fed fructose syrup showed significant impairment in their cognitive abilities—they struggled to remember their way out of the maze. They were slower, and their brains showed a decline in synaptic activity. Their brain cells had trouble signaling each other, disrupting the rats' ability to think clearly and recall the route they'd learned six weeks earlier.

Additionally, the fructose-fed rats showed signs of resistance to insulin, a hormone that controls your blood sugar and synaptic function in your brain.

Because insulin is able to pass through your blood-brain barrier, it can trigger neurological processes that are important for learning and memory. Consuming large amounts of fructose may block insulin's ability to regulate how your brain cells store and use sugar for the energy needed to fuel thoughts and emotions. The average American consumes roughly 47 pounds of cane sugar and 35 pounds of high-fructose corn syrup per year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture2.

Researchers concluded that a high fructose diet harms your brain, as well as the rest of your body. But there is even more to this story.

A second group of rats was given omega-3 fatty acids in the form of flaxseed oil and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), in addition to the high fructose diet. After six weeks, this group of rats was able to navigate the maze better and faster than the rats in the non-DHA group.

The researchers concluded that DHA is protective against fructose's harmful effects on the brain. DHA is essential for synaptic function—it helps your brain cells transmit signals to one another, which is the mechanism that makes learning and memory possible. Your body can't produce enough DHA, so it must be supplemented through your diet.

YOUR CHOICE IS either to cut out all sweeteners, artificial included, use a little cane sugar for occasional treats, and take DHA supplements – fish oils!  OR, go down the road of destruction, ignore conclusive research, eat lots of sweet junk food, including "candy cereals" and be stupid.

I think you are smart enough to follow choice one.

Ask dr. heather: My child is coughing all the time.

My little boy started preschool about 3 weeks ago. He is loving it but this past weekend he had a slight fever and then developed a cough. He is able to function okay but it does wake him up at night. I really do not want to give him antibiotics. Any thoughts?

A lot about kids, when going back to school from a holiday, may develop a persistent cough. Luckily, my kids have  – so far  – avoided it but with past experience I know how hard it is for both the child and the parent. Below are a few of my suggestions:

Botanical Medicines

I adore Wise Woman Herbal’s cough elixir and their children’s glycerite formulas ( Children's Glycerite and Elderberry). Most kids have no problem taking either.

dosage: With whichever you chose: 1 full dropperful in approximately 1/8th a cup of warm, 4 times a day for 3 days and then 2 times a day for 4 days.

Hydrotherapy/Magic Socks Treatment

Magic socks will most definitely help your son sleep through the night.

treatment: These treatments are best when repeated for 3 consecutive nights.

Here is video the girls did to show how to set your son up… YouTube.

Indications:

Sore throats or any inflammations or infections of the throat, neck pain, ear infections, headaches, nasal congestion, upper respiratory infections, coughs, bronchitis, sinus infection, fever, or teething.

Supplies:

1 pair of cotton socks

1 pair of wool socks

Directions:

  • Take the pair of cotton socks and completely soak in cold water. Be sure to wring the socks out so that they are not dripping.
  • Warm feet up. It is nice to have a warm bath first and then do the wet sock treatment.
  • Dry feet off.
  • Put cold wet socks on and then the wool socks.
  • Keep socks on overnight or during nap times. The socks should be dry by the morning.

Effects of the treatment:

This treatment acts to reflexively increase the circulation and decrease the congestion in the upper respiratory passages, head, and throat. It has a sedating action and many people will report sleeping better during treatment. This treatment is also effective for pain relief and increases the healing process during acute infections.

Vitamin C

Alacer vitamin c packs are great. Kids can do it themselves and really enjoy the fizzing of the drink and the flavor.

dosage: 1/2 a pack, 2 times a day

Baked Pears

I’m not quite sure why, but Chinese doctors suggest baked pears  – perhaps it is because their shape is similar to the lung – as part of a treatment for any type of lung condition. I suggest adding a little cinnamon to the pears for a little more flavor and nutrients.

You can purchase any of the supplements through Emerson Ecologics on my site ( click here) or your local health food store will have similar products.

It is always best to visit your child's pediatrician to inform them of your concerns and to find the best treatments.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Be well,

Wake up to the Yogurt Fool Facts

It just makes me mad.  Plain yogurt is healthy.  It is what many food companies do to it that makes it unhealthy. You think yogurt with fruit on the bottom is healthy – too many have more sugar than a candy bar.  Watch for the amount of sugar and ingredients in all flavored yogurts. There are some healthier brands. It's really better to buy plain and add your own fresh or frozen fruit.  Bottled drinkable yogurts/smoothies may have as many calories as an ice cream dessert.  Again, it is all the added ingredients used to make it that are collectively unhealthy.  Instead, make you own yogurt smoothies with fresh fruit.  Frozen yogurt is mostly misleading as to its health benefits.  By the time it is flavored and sprinkled with toppings, you are really looking at an ice cream sundae.  Please watch out for sugar and fat-free versions.  Artificial ingredients are the worst!  Now you know not to be fooled by some food companies.  Outsmart them with your knowledge – Buy Smart.
