Performance Food: Mint fuels just about everything!

Your brain, blood, bones, ears, eyes, hair, heart, lungs, mouth/teeth, muscles, nails, nerves, nose, and skin are all fed by the nutrients found in mint.  Put a sprig in ice water, lemonade or tea. Place some leaves in your summer salads.  Stir minced mint leaves into your freshly steamed vegetables just before serving.  Use mint oil when baking.  Mint not only smells irresistable, it brightens up the flavors of your food and drinks.  Everyone loves the flavor of mint. Pick Just One and Do It… for your health

Pick just one of these five easy to do resolutions to improve your mental and physical health in 2011*:  
1.
Drink more water (coffee and sodas don't count).  
2. 5 days on/2 days off (eat healthier foods for five days, enjoy treats on the weekend). 
3. Portion control (don't overload your plates- also a budget saver). 
4. Keep moving (get up and move around for a few minutes every hour). 
5. Sleep at least 7 hours a day (turn that tv off and go to bed).

Any one of these will have both a short and long term positive impact on the health of your family as well as you.  You 'll feel better and consequently so will they.  Do more than one if you want – may be easier to add another later in the year.

Radio Gem: Make Sun Tea with your Kids – YUM!

Sun tea
Dr. Keri Marshall gave us an easy super-delicious recipe for Sun Tea:
    – Find a glass jar with a lid (spaghetti sauce jar).Â
    – Fill with spring water
    – Throw in some mint leaves (peppermint or spearmint – buy fresh at market if you aren’t growing them)
    – Place lid on top and put in sunny spot outside
    – Over time watch the water change color
    – When a rich color, take it inside and filter out the mint leaves
    – Add honey and lemon juice to taste
    – Serve on ice.  Very refreshing and delicious!
Kids can make this from beginning to end.  If they make enough, they can set up a Sun Tea stand and sell it!

Side health benefits:  great for digestion, antioxidant, anti0microbial making it a breath refresher

Side budget benefit: cheaper than buying the not-as-good-for-you flavored teas in cans and bottles.
