5 Raw Meat Safety Tips by radio guest, Kimberly Stewart

To prevent e coli, salmonella and more, make these tips a habit. 1. Place all raw meat packaging in plastic bags when shopping.  Use paper towels when handling to avoid spreading contamination.  Keep meat filled bags away from produce in cart.  2.  Use by date. Don't touch if expired.  3. Keep in plastic bag and place on bottom shelf of refrigerator so doesn't drip on other food.  Eat within 2 or 3 days. Or, freeze  immediately. Thaw in refrigerator, not on counter. 4. Use cutting board designated just for meat.  Always clean board thoroughly after use.  5. Ground meat must be cooked so not raw – medium to well. Searing surfaces of other cuts will kill the e coli. Enjoy quality meats.  Just eat less to manage your budget!

Wash Your Hands! Prevent Food Illness

Twenty seconds with a little soap and water can reduce your family’s chances of becoming sick from food.  “Consider it (food) contaminated when you bring it in the house.” *  According to a survey by the International Food Information Council, fewer people are washing their hands before handling food at home.  Prevention is so simple.  Washing the food and handling it with care is also important.  But at least wash your hands!

Watch out for the latest Food Craze!

Food companies are jumping on the appeal of sugar and salt flavor combinations. This flavor profile is a recipe for obesity… and other illnesses. Outsmart them and don't buy such products they will sell in stores and at fast-food restaurants. Instead, stick to fresh foods and season them yourself with a little sea sale or sugar.

Grocery List: Kid Kritics love frozen wild blueberries!

Kid Kritics recently taste tested Wyman's of Maine frozen wild blueberries.  They loved them!   The good news is that these berries are loaded with phytonutrients and antioxidants, exactly what is needed to fight the "bugs" that cause colds and the flu.  This makes them the perfect winter food.  Keep some in your freezer.  Use them as toppings, add them to smoothies, fresh fruit cups, simple salad dressings, plain yogurt, pancakes, and in low-sugar muffins and pies. Get creative and think out of the box.  Invest in blueberries and avoid the doctor.

Performance Food: ORANGES fuel your hair, nails and more!

T'is the season for fresh oranges!  Their phytonutrients feed your brain, blood, hair, mouth/teeth, nails, nerves, and nose (sense of smell).  As with every fruit, fresh is best.  Then your digestive tract receives the health benefits of its fiber.  As you know, oranges are full of Vitamin C making them cold and flu prevention food.  However, they are also high in sugar, the immune crasher and fat producer. This is why we do not recommend drinking a lot of orange juice, including while you are sick with a cold.  They are known to be mucus builders.  Eat orange sections so you will receive its full nutrient benefits and feel satiated.  Enjoy fresh them at breakfast, lunch and snacks.
