Spring Cleaning: Your Pantry!

It's that time of year! Time when we are inspired to clean our houses and our lives of any unwanted clutter and stress. Perfect time to also clean out your pantry and stock up with new and better foods for you.

Start off looking at your canned goods, keep only what you can't live without. Then try to switch out for buying fresh or when needed and available packaged in glass. Canned goods can come in handy on a last minute pinch, but their BPA dangers, added salt, and other artificial ingredients are not ideal for everyday consumption.

Next look at your pasta, rice, cake batter and baking flours. Make sure you have at least 80% as whole grains. Switch out white rice for brown rice. Explore other grains such as quinoa, barley, Freekeh and bulgur. The basics are also very important, look at all your "best by dates" on all your products, including herbs and spices and throw out anything expired. On average we throw away $1 for every $4 of purchased food, we must break this trend with meal planning and avoiding stocking up due to sales when you are unsure you will use it in time.

The snack section of your pantry is just as important. Look through it and see what can you substitute with more nutritious options. Try to get rid of anything with lab-made food dyes, added preservatives, excessive sugar or salt and "empty calories" type snacks which don’t provide any nutritious value and may increase underlying stress. Look at our grocery list for great ideas on snacks and more! Our Kid Kritics Approved Brands have plenty of options to make stocking your pantry an easy task.

As we defrost from winter into spring we can start looking forward to Summer! Time to look and feel our best. Having the right foods at home to fuel your body is crucial to a successful "Spring time cleaning" of your health.

Save Money. Stop buying Soda.

I watch people putting cases and huge bottles of soda in their carts and wonder what they are thinking.  They are spending their hard earned money on carbonated dyed sugar water, described by some as Liquid Candy.  They are kidding themselves when they are buying diet which is worse.  Both are empty of nutrients and full of disease related ingredients.  Not only are you paying for the actual soda, you will be soon paying for soda induced doctor  and pharmaceutical bills in the near and far future.  This is an addictive acting expensive habit. Buy water or water filters instead.  Stop throwing your money down the soda drain.  Can you afford to do this?

At last, there is a way to decorate your holiday cakes, cupcakes and cookies without using those dyes made from derivatives of coal tar and oil. Go to www.NaturalCandyStore.com to buy little jars of your color choice. They won't be as bright as the others which is your cue they are all natural, made from real food such as beets. Does Less Sugar in Cereal Really Make It Better?

The good news is that General Mills has been gradually reducing the amount of added sugar put into their cereals targeted for kids.  Franken Berry has been reduced from 3  3/4 teaspoons to 2  1/2 teaspoons of sugar per serving. Apple Cinnamon Cheerios from 3  1/4 to 2  1/2 teaspoons.  And, Lucky Charms from 3 to 2  1/2 teaspoons of sugar.  They say that's as far as they can go to keep it sweet.  Less sugar does make it better, a bit better.  Measure 2  1/2 teaspoons of sugar in a cup and then image spooning it into your  children's mouths.

Also, too many have dyes and other artificial ingredients are still in their kid cereals.  Lucky Charms are colored with Yellow 5 &6, Blue 1, and Red 40, plus they are flavored artificially.  What do you think those marshmallows are made of – junk.  Why does cereal have to be sugary?  We say, you are spending a lot of money on junk cereal for breakfast which is a counter-productive way for your kids to start their day.

Whole grains, nuts and fruit combined are full of naturally delicious flavors.  There are many brands such as Barbara's Bakery and Nature's Path with better cereal choices.  Or, scramble a free range egg and serve a strip of turkey bacon with it for breakfast.  This will set you kids up for a positively productive day and save you money!

How to Humble your Summer Sugar Cravings

It's summer so why not cave and eat that ice cream cone, strawberry shortcake, drink lots of ice cold pink lemonade?  After all, its hot out and don't you deserve some sugar fun?  I would agree that an occasional summer treat is in order.  My choice is real, not dyed green, mint chocolate chip ice cream.  However, I don't want to play with fire, the diabetes and debilitating related diseases consequences.  Problem is, sugar is not just in treats.  It is a dominant player in processed foods such as ketchup and flavored yogurts.  How much should you have?  Woman, about 6 teaspoons a day.  Children, about 4 teaspoons daily. Sound reasonable?  Note: 4 grams of sugar equals 1 teaspoon.  BBQ sauce (1/2 cup) has 33 grams = more than 8 teaspoons of sugar.  A fat-free fruit yogurt may have 47 grams – almost 12 teaspoons of sugar.  And that delicious pink (dyed) lemonade?  1 cup contains 25 grams or over 6 teaspoons, more than you daily limit.  How many of you drink just one cup on a hot day?  Get my point?  So how do your humble your sugar cravings?  Be aware and eat less.  By the way, protein is known to diminish your desire for sweets.  Eat nuts, seeds, cheese, slices of meat or hummus to manage your sugar intake.  Then once in awhile, have that ice cream cone!
