Barramundi – the other salmon!


Ever heard of barramundi?  It is a mild, sweet fish with enough Omega 3s to provide daily needs, though only half of that found in salmon.   Barramundi is known for its lower mercury content, a very important fact.  No, it is not salmon but it serves as a delicious lighter alternative.  Ellen had her first serving in Australia.  Now it is available in the U.S. Look for it in your supermarket, probably in the freezer section.  Try it!

Radio Gem: Make Sun Tea with your Kids – YUM!

Sun tea
Dr. Keri Marshall gave us an easy super-delicious recipe for Sun Tea:
    – Find a glass jar with a lid (spaghetti sauce jar).
    – Fill with spring water
    – Throw in some mint leaves (peppermint or spearmint – buy fresh at market if you aren’t growing them)
    – Place lid on top and put in sunny spot outside
    – Over time watch the water change color
    – When a rich color, take it inside and filter out the mint leaves
    – Add honey and lemon juice to taste
    – Serve on ice.  Very refreshing and delicious!
Kids can make this from beginning to end.  If they make enough, they can set up a Sun Tea stand and sell it!

Side health benefits:  great for digestion, antioxidant, anti0microbial making it a breath refresher

Side budget benefit: cheaper than buying the not-as-good-for-you flavored teas in cans and bottles.

RADIO GEM: Let kids get dirty in the garden!

RADIO GEM: Sunblock tips!

We all need to protect our skin from the sun – but which products are best?  Dr. Sally Byrd and skincare expert Stacey Stilts answered this question during our radio show.  Stacey recommends choosing sunblock creams and lotions rather than sprays or powders which could be easily inhaled.  Also, avoid sunscreens containing oxybenzone, parabens, and retinol (or any form of vitamin A).   Products over SPF 30 contain extra chemicals and provide minimal added protection.  Remember to re-apply at least every 2 hours.  And be sure to use sunblock even in the water and on cloudy days!  Sally also recommends taking eating more green foods or taking greens supplements daily (such as seaweed, spirulina, and chlorella) for skin health and anti-aging benefits.  Information on sunblock and natural skincare can be found on ewg.org and greenlinebeauty.com.  For more info and specific brand recommendations, get the free podcast of “Suntan Lotion for Kids and More Skin Care Tips” on iTunes!
